Divergent: Ascendant - production update April 1, 2016
Ascendant is the fourth and final film in the Divergent series of movies based on the popular young adult science fiction novels. The movie series stars Shailene Woodley as Tris, a young woman who becomes a reluctant freedom fighter when it is revealed that the people who live in a future Chicago are expendable guinea pigs in highly-controlled experiment. Theo James stars alongside Woodley as Four, her boyfriend and partner in the quest to find out the truth behind what lies beyond their walled city.
The previous three Divergent movies have been directed by Robert Schwentke, however Lee Toland Kreiger has joined Ascendant as Director after the series veteran cited fatigue from back-to-back productions. Schwentke's decision to leave the franchise is looking like something of a masterstroke in light of Allegiant's failure to perform to the same levels as the first two films at the North American box office. The third outing is tracking at half the box office ticket sales as Insurgent and will rely heavily on international film markets to help bolster its overall financial performance.
The failure of Allegiant to perform at the US box office is already leading to speculation that Ascendant's budget has undergone serious revision by the management at Lionsgate; the film's financier and distributor. The completion of The Hunger Games series has left a significant income hole in Lionsgate's performance and the first two Divergent movies helped, to some extent, in off-setting the headwinds the company has been operating against. Allegiant's poor performance places massive pressure on everyone involved in the fourth film to get it done efficiently, on time and (no doubt) under budget.
