Superman: The Movie daybill poster & lobby cardsThe initial marketing for Superman: The Movie was careful not to reveal too much about the titular character, only to tell audiences that "You'll believe a man can fly". What people already knew was that Superman, by his name alone, was no ordinary individual; he's an alien from a long-dead world. As the film came closer to release, images of Christopher Reeve's Superman began to appear in posters, TV advertisements and in cinema foyers by way of the popular (but no longer used) lobby cards.
In Australia, we had the "daybill" (seen to the left); a poster format only used here that was printed locally by M.A.P.S (Mailing and Print Services) and was stamped "M.A.P.S litho" and measured 33 cm wide by 76 cm long. |
Superman: The Movie - international postersOne of the key challenges confronting Superman: The Movie in non-Western film markets was the lack of familiarity audiences had with leading man Christopher Reeve. In response to this, the film's marketing in Asian countries featured both Marlon Brando and Gene Hackman. Despite his eccentric ways, Brando was still an international movie star and his name attracted attention. The film's Asian posters also featured Reeves' Superman flying; the intention being to engage people's curiosity to see how the film's makers had managed to achieve such a feat.
